The Virtue of Fasting 6 Days in Shawwal After Ramadan

One of the greatest blessings for Muslims is the opportunity to earn multiplied rewards through voluntary acts of worship. Among these is fasting six days in Shawwal, which carries the immense reward of fasting the entire year.

The Hadith Evidence

"Whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days from Shawwal, it is as if he fasted the entire year."

Sahih Muslim 1164

The Wisdom Behind This Practice

Islamic scholars explain that this tremendous reward is based on the principle that:

  • Each good deed is multiplied 10 times (Quran 6:160)
  • 30 days of Ramadan × 10 = 300 days
  • 6 days of Shawwal × 10 = 60 days
  • Total = 360 days (approximately a full year)

How to Observe These Fast

The six fasts may be observed:

  1. Consecutively: All six days together after Eid
  2. Separately: Any six days throughout Shawwal month
  3. Preferred days: Monday and Thursday or the White Days (13th, 14th, 15th of lunar month)

Important Notes:

1. Women should make up missed Ramadan fasts first before these voluntary fasts
2. These fasts are not valid if Eid day is intentionally fasted
3. The intention should be made the night before or before dawn

Spiritual Benefits

Fasting these six days helps:

  • Maintain the spiritual momentum from Ramadan
  • Compensate for any deficiencies in Ramadan fasts
  • Develop continuous consciousness of Allah (Taqwa)
  • Increase in good deeds before the year ends

Final Reminder:

While these fasts are highly recommended, they remain voluntary. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The most beloved deeds to Allah are the consistent ones, even if they are small." (Bukhari). Therefore, what matters most is sincerity and consistency in worship.
